We need more Swimming Teachers!

North East Fife Liberal Democrats are calling on the Scottish Government and Sport Scotland to find a solution to the ongoing challenges of access to swimming lessons and qualifying swimming teachers. Currently swimming instructors in Scotland are put off by a qualification that is more expensive than the rest of the UK. This causes our schools and swim clubs to have fewer instructors supporting people to learn a vital life skill, and enjoy the sport of swimming. Scotland removed compulsory swimming lessons for all children in schools almost 15 years ago. with over 100km of coastline in North East Fife, and three times the UK average for death by accidental drowning, lessons help teach a life saving skill. But This cannot happen unless we ensure we have the necessary number of swimming instructors. We need a qualification that is accessible and encourages those who want to learn how to teach swimming. By supporting our swimming teachers, we also help to preserve our pools, reducing further closures in Scotland. Please sign this petition to help raise awareness to the Scottish Government and Sport Scotland for the need to improve access for prospective swim teachers, which will then improve access to swimming lessons.
